This is just one of those books, it's so good you can't hardly believe it, even while you're reading it.Beautiful edgy prose, breath-taking betrayals, head-spinning plot twists. It will turn you upside down and inside out.
Muse is a half-blood demon in modern-day Boston. She'd left the Netherworld and her lover, Akil, behind, trying for a normal life. But Muse will never be normal.
The day a strange man in a red leather coat with glacial blue eyes walks into her shop, her life implodes. Is her former lover trying to kill her? Is the red-coated assassin with the scorpian tattoos trying to save her, or merely part of the elaborate cat-and-mouse game Akil has been playing all along?
Things I loved about this book. First, the language is spell-binding.
From the first line:
*I should have known he’d be trouble as soon as he walked into my workshop, but I couldn’t have known he’d be the death of me.*
To fanatastic imagery:
*His entire body, clothes and all, glinted sharply with fragments of ice. But it was the wings that held me spellbound. They rose from his back, insubstantial, not quite solid enough to touch, but very real. Each feather appeared to be made of ice. The light from the streetlights fractured through each fine barb, casting multicolored shafts of light on the black asphalt surrounding him.*
It's also bitingly funny at times:
“This where you bring all your girls before you bury them in the woods?”
And
“What? Don’t tell me you don’t like ice cream?” He looked shocked enough that I had to smile.
“Sure.” Ice cream before lunch? It was just a bit odd. That was all. I sat across the table from him and watched as he popped open the lid. “I gather you like ice cream?”
An eyebrow twitched comically. “Snow demon.” He shrugged.
Then there's Muse herself. You rarely see a character this abused. The things she has had to endure make your stomach roil. She's been worse than a slave, a plaything for the demons who consider her the worst kind of filth.
*For as long as I could remember, I’d been in chains.*
*I’d spent a great deal of time washing the filth from my own skin, imagined and real.*
I also liked that Muse isn't just this strong, kick-ass character, she's sometimes very weak and she struggles to make sense of a life that would make anyone insane.
The weight of his stare quickened my pulse, stealing away the confidence I’d embraced all day. I bit into my lip, feeling as though I were shrinking in size with every second that ticked by.
I could never run from the half of me that danced in the dark.
But Muse endures, and she does kick ass. This book will rip your heart out and hand it to you and make you say 'thank you' for the pleasure you took in the pain.
Just amazing. 5 stars is not nearly enough.

Charlie thought she could live a normal life. Little did she know, life could never be normal for a half-human, half-demon with a target on her back. Muse is back and livelier than ever, and though she tries to deny it, she cannot withstand the allure of pure chaos.
Muse was a complicated character to get behind. At times I sympathized with her traumatic past and begged her not to trust too easily. But despite her troubled past, she seems to trust people so blindly, and this could potentially be her fatal flaw.
I know we were supposed to be rooting for Stefan here- at least, that’s what it seemed- but I hate him AND Akil. They’re both lying, manipulative arses, and I think Muse deserves so much better. Not giving anything away here, but neither Stefan nor Akil should be trusted. The only one Muse can depend on is herself.
I was very invested in the first half of the book, but as it went on, it got more and more predictable. I also felt that, rather than trying to make sense of the warped relationship between Stefan and Akil, the author was more interested in trying to pull the rug out from underneath her readers over and again. Blah. Not impressed. I demand sense! In all, it wasn’t a bad book, and I’ll probably read the next one to see if it goes better.
This was great. I read a review about this book and I just had to read it for myself.
It was exciting and emotional, it was like I could feel everything that Muse felt. She knew her faults and she was so scared but she didn't let that stop her.
This really could have gone many different ways and I'm so glad the author chose to take it in this direction. Never a boring moment, not even when they would just sit and chat, the action was never far away.
And the mystery of it was just engaging. Not a physical, who-dun-it, typical mystery but, an emotional one when she gets betrayed.
Written all in Muse's POV, I felt like the readers really got to know her instead of the author just scratching the surface and, we even get glimpses into the other characters. Even though it is Muse's POV, the facial expressions and what they would say gave readers insight into how they worked.
The characters are so in depth and well written, I love everyone, even the bad guys. I didn't know who to trust or what to believe.
The ending is such an obvious cliffhanger but, I love it. There were so many places the book could've ended but, I think the author made the right choice in how it ended.
If you pick this book up, be prepared to not wanting to put it down. I need the other books. Pippa Dacosta, you have yourself another fan and hopefully you get many more.
