The Iron Butterfly The Iron Butterfly Series Book 1 eBook Chanda Hahn

I had trouble rating this book, but I ended up giving it a 3.8 rating. It's well written, the world is an interesting one, the world building was well done, the characters are complex and intriguing, the premiss is believable and the story is definitely gripping. But, for some reason, it was easy for me to put this book away and almost forget about it for long periods of time.
What happened for me was that, even though there was plenty of adventure and excitement in Thalia's (the main character's) life, all the mysteries surrounding her past and what had happened to her were slow to unveil (and many haven't yet). For me, that made it feel like there was a pace problem. More mystery was being presented, but not enough mystery was being reveled.
Still, it was a very enjoyable read. The magical world of Calandry and the intriguing Denai make this a very captivating story. Thalia is a great main character, and it's great to see her coming to her powers and to herself. The secondary characters are also very interesting. There are hints of a love triangle (or is it a love square?), but it isn't overdone to the point that annoyed me.
For those who are wondering, actually, if this is a book that might be right for your children, I can safely say that this book is proper for any age. There is some romance, but nothing pass light kissing. There are some fights and mention of torture, but nothing overly aggressive or explicit (nothing more than blood running). This is actually a beautiful coming of age story. She overcomes her past and her fears and is slowly learning about who she really is. And it has plenty of adventure too.
All in all I enjoyed it, especially because Fantasy is my favorite genre. But I hope to get many more answers in the sequel, The Steele Wolf.

The Iron Butterfly The Iron Butterfly Series Book 1 eBook Chanda Hahn Reviews

So I'm reading along, minding my own business, when suddenly, I arrive at the juncture between chapters 27, and 28. (I'll try to make this as vague as possible, so I don't spoil anything) At the end of chapter 27, they're talking about Thalia feeling weak, and then she's abruptly dreaming at the beginning of 28, so at first im thinking, "oh okay, she must have fainted, though the transition was a little weird," but then, upon waking up, the book suddenly states that she was found in an entirely different place than where she was last, and in no time they start referencing plans she's made with another character (even though I never heard anyone even alude to these plans), followed by a confusing rush to the climax, that can only make me think that im missing something.... like a chunk of the story! Idk if it was done intentionally by the author, or if it's a problem with this kindle version, or if there was just an error when I downloaded it to my device, but something is definitely off. It sort of ruined the whole experience for me. So while the story itself is decent aside from that fluke (to the point where I'd give it three or four stars), im gonna have to lower the score since I'm not sure if it was an error, or a creative choice, but I know that it sucked. I just hope that if it is just an error, it didn't happen to anyone else who bought the story.
This was interesting, to say the least.

It started out by grabbing my attention but then it kind of slacked off and I got a little bored. I almost put the book down and wouldn’t have finished it but, I decided to push on because what kind of reviewer would I be if I just didn’t read through every book? I’m glad I didn’t put it down because it picked back up and held on to my attention with a vengeance.

Before I knew it, I was physically reacting when someone would show up, gasping and throwing my hands in the air. I’m just glad I was alone because I get strange looks when I react to a book in public.

There are two guys that she’s developing feelings for and for once, I’m not sure who I want her to be with, I don’t know who to root for.

There’s the plainly obvious choice and then there’s the mysterious guy who tells her that she should hate him and she’s starting to question his sanity, the one who switches emotions so fast, you’re getting whiplash for her.

I’m hopeful for this series, if it had not slowed down and bored me in that one section, it would have been five stars. Hopefully the rest of the series keeps up and doesn’t slow down or I will be very disappointed.
Between her memory loss, her imprisonment by the Raven, and her conflicting love and hate of Joss and Kael, Thalia developed her skill as a fighter and her absorbing powers throughout the novel. The fantasy, futuristic setting of the Citadel in Haven , was perplexing as it seemed to be of ancient, pre-electricity/ computers, yet the Denai have harnessed strong magical powers. The disappearance of Kael and the appearance of her father Bearden Valdrystal and her lost Valdrystal clan, makes one suspicious at the sudden turn of events.

This is definitely fantasy fiction for the teenager interested in a slightly romantic bend on warring kingdoms and experiments on kidnapped children of Denai, and definitely not my genre. It took me about a month of starts and fits to plod through this novel. Maybe in another place and time, I would be inspired to read about Thalia' s further self-discovery and her life altering events, but not now.
